Men’s Tennis Finishes Homestand by Edging Eastern Illinois, 4-3

Sophomore Felix Savard posted a win at No. 2 singles today against Eastern Illinois to clinch the match for the Cougars
HOMEWOOD, Ill. – The Chicago State men's tennis team finished off its three-match homestand here today as it edged visiting Eastern Illinois by a score of 4-3 at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Center.
 
The Green and White claimed wins in all three double flights to earn a 1-0 advantage that began with juniors Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) and Gonzalo Martinez (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo) taking the No. 2 contest with a 6-2 win over Trent Reiman and Ferdinand Ammer.
 
Sophomore Felix Savard (Laval, QC Canada/Saint-Gabriel) and freshman Jiri Nouza (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnasium Budejouicka 680) recorded a 6-4 victory over Gage Kingsmith and Grant Reiman in the No. 1 flight, while junior Rohan Wattley (Slough, United Kingdom/Burnham) and freshman Cody Wurzelbacher (Toledo, Ohio/Springfield) edged out Jared Woodson and Jacob Wendell by a close 7-5 margin at No. 3.
 
After EIU won at No. 6 singles to even the match at 1-1, CSU captured the next three matches to seal the win before the Panthers won the final two contests.
 
Nouza claimed a 6-1, 7-5 victory in his No. 1 flight match against Kingsmith, while Gonzalez posted his third win of the week after defeating Trent Reiman by scores of 6-2 and 6-4. Savard then earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Grant Reiman at No. 2 singles.
 
The Cougars are idle for the next two weeks until March 25 when they open Western Athletic Conference play in Phoenix against New Mexico State on the campus of Grand Canyon beginning at 12 p.m.
