Women’s Basketball Battles Tough against New Mexico State at Home

CHICAGO – Chicago State women's basketball battled tough in its Breast Cancer Awareness Game at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center this afternoon against Western Athletic Conference-leading New Mexico State. The Aggies used a big fourth quarter rally to gain a 65-54 victory over the Cougars.
 
NM State posted an early 4-0 lead in the opening minute of the first quarter and later took a 6-2 lead on a Tamera William layup at 8:44. CSU would go on a 13-9 scoring drive in four-plus minute span to capture a 15-14 advantage which ended with a layup from junior Destiny Harris (Crete, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) at the 3:43 mark of the stanza. The visitors scored eight of the final 12 points in the final three and a half minutes to gain a 22-19 lead.
 
The second quarter was a defensive back-and-forth affair between both teams with CSU tallying six of the next nine points through a near five-minute span to even the score at 25-25 with 5:03 left on a corner jumper by senior Cailin Nix (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville). The Aggies went on a quick 9-3 scoring drive in over a minute to regain the lead at 34-28 following Moriah Mack's layup. Jumpers in the final minute from sophomore Nadia Miller (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) and redshirt junior Jessica Cerda (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) pulled the Green and White to within two points at 34-32 heading into halftime.
 
During halftime, CSU Athletics held a special ceremony dedicated to survivors of breast cancer with Interim Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services/Senior Woman Administrator Phyllon Jackson serving as the M.C.
 
CSU gained a one-point lead at 35-34 on a Nix three-pointer at the 9:20 mark of the third quarter before NMSU went on an 11-3 run in a three-plus minute span to recapture the lead at 43-38 with 4:49 remaining in the stanza. The Cougars ended the quarter by tallying eight of the next 13 points scored to pull within 48-46 that ended with a layup from sophomore Kaylee Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) with three seconds left.
 
The visitors opened the fourth quarter with a 13-4 run in the first six minutes to take a 61-50 lead with 3:35 remaining and increased the advantage to 63-50 at the 2:44 mark. CSU would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
 
Allen paced the Cougars with game highs of 20 points and eight rebounds on the day, while Nix contributed 14 points and dished out a game-high four assists.
 
Three players scored in double figures for New Mexico State with Brianna Freeman scoring a team-leading 17 points.
 
The Cougars open their final three-game road swing of the season with a WAC contest at Seattle on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 9 p.m.
