Women’s Basketball Ends Final Road Swing with WAC Battle at UMKC

KANSAS CITY – The Chicago State women's basketball team closed out its final regular season road swing here today at Municipal Auditorium with a 62-53 defeat to host UMKC in a Western Athletic Conference contest.
 
The visitors jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the opening quarter after sophomore Kaylee Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) split a pair of free throws at the 6:09 mark, but UMKC would use a 10-2 scoring run in a near four-minute span to gain a 12-9 advantage that concluded with a Ceidra Coleman jumper at 2:34. CSU then tallied nine of the next 15 points in the final two minutes to even the score at 18-18.
 
Allen canned a jumper in the first 19 seconds of the second stanza to put the Cougars ahead 20-18 before the 'Roos scored five unanswered points to recapture the lead at 23-20 with 8:09 to go in the quarter after another Coleman jumper. The Green and White then produced a quick 7-0 run in three-plus minutes to post a 27-23 lead that ended with an Allen layup at 4:47. Seven of the final 10 points were scored by UMKC in the final 3:48 to send the game into intermission tied at 30 apiece.
 
The home team outscored CSU by a 9-1 margin in over the first five minutes of the third quarter to post a 39-31 lead at the 4:56 mark after Coleman hit another jumper. The Cougars then closed out the stanza with an 8-2 scoring drive to pull within two at 41-39 going into the final period.
 
The fourth quarter saw two ties and two lead changes in the opening two minutes before UMKC posted a 10-2 run in just over four minutes to post a 55-48 advantage with 3:35 remaining. CSU scored five quick points in over a minute to pull within two at 55-53 after Allen canned a three-pointer with 2:03 left in the quarter, but the 'Roos scored the final seven points down the stretch for the final margin.
 
Allen led all scorers with 15 points while shooting 2-of-4 from three-point range and connected on five of her seven free throw attempts. Senior Cailin Nix (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) finished with 11 points and dished out a game-high three assists. Freshman Alexandria Cliff (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) contributed seven rebounds and a season-best three assists.
 
Coleman scored 14 points to lead four players in double figures for UMKC. Kristen Moore added a double-double of 12 points and a game-leading 11 rebounds.
 
The Cougars kick off a three-game homestand at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center on Thursday, Feb. 23 with a WAC contest against Grand Canyon that will be broadcast live on WVON 1690 AM radio beginning at 7 p.m.
