Burns’ Career High Leads Five CSU Players in Double Figures at SIUE

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Senior Glen Burns (West Memphis, Ark./West Memphis Christian) tallied a career-high 18 points to lead five Chicago State men's basketball players in double figures as it opened a three-game road swing with an 88-76 defeat to in-state foe SIU Edwardsville tonight at the Valdabene Center.
 
The visitors opened an early 4-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game on two layups from freshman Cameron Bowles (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) and later brought its early advantage to 6-2 following a layup by senior Montana Byrd (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) at the 17:32 mark. A 14-3 run in a five-minute stretch propelled SIUE to a 16-9 lead with 12:23 left in the stanza. CSU then scored 11 unanswered points over four minutes to reclaim the lead at 20-16 that ended with a steal and layup from redshirt senior Jelani Pruitt (Gary, Ind./Merrillville (Ind.)) at 8:24.
 
Both teams then played through five lead changes and two ties for the next five-plus minutes before the home team went on a 7-2 run to take a 35-28 lead with 1:25 remaining in the half, but the Green and White finished the half by scoring five of the last seven points down the stretch to slice their deficit to 37-33 at halftime.
 
Chicago State kicked off the second half by tallying a quick 10-6 scoring drive in a span of 3:44 to knot the score at 43-43 which finished with an acrobatic reverse layup from Burns with 16:16 remaining in the half. SIUE then used a 14-2 scoring run over three minutes to retake the lead at 57-45 at the 13:21 mark. CSU pulled within 57-51 with two minutes later after scoring six unanswered points under 12 minutes to go, but the home team would score 31 of the last 56 points to seal the victory.
 
For the game, CSU held advantages in points in the paint (46-40) and second chance points (12-3) while both teams recorded eight fast break points.
 
Burns shot 7-of-10 from the field while adding a team-high five rebounds, five assists and two steals on the evening for Chicago State. Senior Deionte Simmons (Detroit, Mich./Lewisville (Texas)) contributed 17 points followed by Pruitt posting a season-high 13 points, and junior Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) adding 12 points and five boards. Bowles rounded out the quartet with a season-high 10 points.
 
SIUE, who had four players in double figures, were led offensively by Christian Ellis (19 points, eight assists) and Jalen Henry (19 points, six rebounds).
 
After taking a few days off for Christmas, CSU returns to action on Dec. 27 when it travels to Madison, Wis., to battle Big Ten Conference foe Wisconsin at the Kohl Center in a live ESPNU broadcast beginning at 8 p.m.
