Byrd Leads Three CSU Men’s Basketball Players in Double Figures against Bradley

CHICAGO – Senior Montana Byrd (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) scored 14 points to lead three players in double figures as the Chicago State men's basketball team made its regular-season return to the Jacoby Dickens Center today with an 84-58 defeat to Bradley in CSU's 150th Anniversary Throwback Game.
 
BU posted an early 5-0 lead at the 18:59 mark of the first half with a three-pointer, but the Green and White quickly scored five of the next seven points just over a minute later to pull within 7-5 with 16:43 left in the stanza following a three from Byrd. The Braves finished the half with a 41-25 run in the final 16 minutes to post a 48-30 advantage at intermission.  
 
At halftime, players and coaches from past Chicago State men's basketball teams were recognized for their contributions to the program which came after the Cougars held a pre-game meet and greet reception on the second floor of the JDC.
 
The Cougars opened the second half by tallying a 14-8 scoring drive in the opening 6:12 of the second half to cut their deficit to 56-44 at the 13:48 mark following a dunk from senior Deionte Simmons (Detroit, Mich./Lewisville (Texas)). Bradley then used a 17-2 run over a seven-minute span to hike its leading margin to 73-46 with 6:52 remaining before cruising on to the win.
 
Byrd connected on 5-of-9 from the field and went 4-of-7 from three-point range, while Simmons finished with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and grabbed a game-leading seven rebounds. Redshirt senior Jelani Pruitt (Gary, Ind./Merrillville (Ind.)) added 10 points and earned a game-high three steals, freshman Cameron Bowles (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) recorded a season-best nine points and senior Glen Burns (West Memphis, Ark./West Memphis Christian) dished out nine assists.
 
Five players recorded double figure scoring for the Braves with Luuk van Bree knocked down all six of his shot attempts, including three three-pointers, to score 15 points.
 
The Cougars begin a three-game road swing on Tuesday night in downstate Edwardsville against host SIU Edwardsville in a live broadcast on Fox Sports Midwest with a start time of 7 p.m.
