Cougars Close Out Weekend WAC Road Swing at Grand Canyon

PHOENIX – The Chicago State women's basketball team closed out its weekend road swing out west here Saturday night as it fell to host Grand Canyon by a score of 57-39 in a Western Athletic Conference contest at the GCU Arena.

The hosts claimed a 22-8 advantage after the game's first 10 minutes before CSU shot 58 percent from the field in the second quarter to post a 15-13 lead yet it went into intermission down 35-23. GCU then recorded a close 22-16 margin in the final two quarters to finish the contest.

The Cougars were led by redshirt senior Jessica Cerda (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) as she scored 13 points that included going 3-of-4 from the free throw line while adding three assists and two steals in 40 minutes of action.

Senior Cailin Nix (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) contributed 12 points and posted a game-high five steals through 40 minutes of play. Sophomore Nadia Miller (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) grabbed seven rebounds and freshman Alexandria Cliff (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) finished the game with seven points.

Marina Laramie posted game highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lopes on the evening.

The Cougars return to the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center on Feb. 4 with a WAC showdown against league-leading New Mexico State with the opening tip set for 2 p.m.
