Cerda, Allen Leads CSU Women in WAC Home Rematch versus UTRGV

CHICAGO – Redshirt junior Jessica Cerda (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) and sophomore Kaylee Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) proved to be a good one-two combination for the Chicago State women's basketball team during today's Western Athletic Conference rematch against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center.
 
The visitors bounced back in the second half to defeat the host Cougars by a score of 57-46 as they closed out its three-game homestand.
 
Cerda led Chicago State with 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting and hit all four of her free throw attempts, while Allen posted her fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. She also recorded three assists, three steals and a season-high three blocked shots on the day.
 
Both teams battled early in the first quarter before the Green and White used an 8-2 scoring drive in the final four minutes of the stanza to capture a 14-8 lead. CSU hiked its advantage to double digits early in the second quarter at 19-8 following a three from Cerda at the 7:10 mark and later held a 22-12 lead with 5:17 to go before UTRGV tallied a 13-4 run down the stretch to cut its deficit to 26-25 going into halftime.
 
The Vaqueros used a 16-7 run during the third quarter hiked their advantage to 41-33, but the home team came back in the fourth with a 11-4 run that lasted five minutes to closed within a point at 45-44 which ended on a jumper from senior Cailin Nix (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) at the 5:10 mark. UTRGV finished the game thanks to posting a 12-2 run in the final 4:45.
 
CSU held advantages in rebounds (43-41), assists (11-10) and second chance points (18-9) for the contest.
 
Junior Destiny Harris (Crete, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) earned game-high honors as she grabbed a season-best 13 rebounds and sophomore Tiana Thomas (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) contributed seven points.
 
Shawnté Goff tallied game-highs of 18 points and four assists to lead the Vaqueros, who also received a double-double from Mary Savoy (12 rebounds, 10 points).
 
CSU kicks off a WAC road swing through the west coast next weekend on Thursday, Jan. 26 at CSU Bakersfield beginning at 7 p.m.
