CSU Men’s Tennis Faces Power Five Opponents to Begin Dual Season

Junior Christian Gonzalez and the CSU men's tennis team opens its spring season tomorrow at Louisville

CHICAGO – The Chicago State men's tennis team hits the road this weekend to open its 2017 dual season as it will face off against two opponents from Power Five conferences - the ACC and the Big Ten.

CSU begins its campaign tomorrow evening in the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center in Louisville when it takes on the host Cardinals at 6 p.m. The Cougars then travel to West Lafayette, Ind. for a doubleheader at Purdue with the first match set for 3:30 p.m.

Junior Gonzalo Martinez (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo) produced a 9-4 record in singles following the fall season to lead CSU that included finishing 2-1 in the ITA Midwest Regional Qualifying Tournament in October. In doubles, Martinez also amassed a 6-4 record during the fall in doubles play with fellow junior Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola).

Louisville returns six players from last season and brings in six newcomers to contend in the ACC this spring. Freshman Parker Wynn leads the Cardinals in singles with a record of 16-6, while senior Sean Donohue has produced a team-leading 11-3 record in doubles.

Purdue opens its season with a tripleheader on Saturday against CSU and Ball State on the Basham Courts of the Schwartz Tennis Center. Redshirt senior Benjamin Ugarte is the top returning singles player for the Boilermakers as he produced a 13-5 record a season ago.
