Women’s Basketball Drops WAC Battle to Utah Valley in OT, 62-59

CHICAGO – Chicago State women's basketball opened its three-game homestand tonight at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center with a hard fought battle against rival Utah Valley in a Western Athletic Conference showdown, but the visiting Wolverines would escape with a thrilling 62-59 overtime victory.
 
UVU scored five unanswered points in a three-minute span of the first quarter to break a 4-4 tie and captured a 9-4 advantage on a layup from Leya Harvey at the 2:10 mark.
 
The home team then went on a quick 10-1 run in the opening minutes of the second quarter with senior Caitlin Nix and redshirt junior Jessica Cerda (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) each tallying five points to capture a 14-10 lead with 6:15 left after Cerda drained a three. After Cerda hit another three to put the Cougars ahead 20-14 with 3:36 left in the stanza, the Wolverines closed out the half by scoring five of the final seven points to close CSU's lead to 22-19 at halftime.
 
A 27-14 scoring drive over a 15-minute span between the third and fourth quarters gave the visitors its biggest lead of the contest at 46-36 with 4:57 remaining in the fourth the ended with a Sam Lubcke layup.
 
The Green and White then went on a 17-7 run, including eight points from Nix, in nearly four minutes to come back to tie the score at 53-53 following a three-point play from sophomore Kaylee Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) with 13 seconds left. UVU had a chance to win but missed a three-pointer at the buzzer sending the game in overtime.
 
In the extra period, it was a back and forth battle as Utah Valley would take a short lead then Chicago State would come back to tie the game which lasted for over four minutes before UVU connected on three of its four free throw attempts in the final eight seconds for the win.
 
The Cougars (0-17, 0-3) had three players score in double figures on the night with Cerda leading the way with 18 points and shot 6-of-12 from the field. Nix added 13 points and five assists, while Allen produced 11 points and eight rebounds.
 
Lubcke recorded a double-double with game highs of 21 points and 18 rebounds to lead Utah Valley (6-11, 1-1).
 
CSU welcomes Seattle U to the Jones Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon in a WAC contest that will be broadcast live on WVON 1690 AM starting at 2 p.m.
