Niculescu Posts Two Wins for CSU Men’s Tennis against UTRGV

Gabriel Niculescu recorded a straight-set win at No. 2 singles and a win at No. 1 doubles Friday against UTRGV
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Freshman Gabriel Niculescu (Bucharest, Romania) continued his recent success for the Chicago State men's tennis team against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Friday, but the Vaqueros captured a 6-1 victory at UMKC's Plaza Tennis Center.

Niculescu opened the match at No. 1 doubles with sophomore Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) to earn a close 7-5 victory over Juan Cruz Soria and Koby Jansen. He followed that by recording his third win over his last four singles matches with a straight-set win in the No. 2 slot over Ethan Ammon by identical 6-3 scores.

Sophomore Rohan Wattley (Slough, United Kingdom/Burnham) and freshman Felix Savard (Laval, QC Canada/Saint-Gabriel) came close to giving the Green and White the doubles points in the No. 2 doubles contest, but dropped a 7-6 (2) decision to Elliot Johnstone and Andres Hernandez.

CSU continues WAC cluster play at the Plaza Tennis Center this afternoon against defending WAC champion New Mexico State with a start time of 1 p.m.
