Niculescu Earns Singles Win in CSU’s 6-1 Defeat at DePaul

Gabriel Niculescu posted a three-set victory at No. 1 singles for CSU today at DePaul

CHICAGO – Freshman Gabriel Niculescu (Bucharest, Romania) recorded the lone point for the Chicago State men's tennis team as it was defeated by host DePaul this evening, 6-1, at the Lakeshore Sport and Fitness Center.

Niculescu evened his record to 3-3 in the No. 1 singles position after defeating Sten Leusink in a three-set battle via scores of 6-3, 4-6 and 10-7.

The Blue Demons (6-13) captured all three doubles matches to gain a 1-0 lead before winning four of the five singles matches played for the win.

Sophomore Gonzalo Martinez (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo) also played a three-set contest for the Cougars (2-14) at No. 4 singles before dropping a 7-5, 6-3 and 10-8 decision to Nathan de Veer.

CSU concludes its weekend slate with a trip to Notre Dame tomorrow evening with a start time of 7 p.m., Eastern Time.
