Men’s Tennis Concludes WAC Slate with Two Matches in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Chicago State men's tennis concluded its Western Athletic Conference regular-season slate here this weekend with a pair of matches at the Plaza Tennis Center on the campus of Missouri-Kansas City.
 
The Cougars dropped a 5-2 decision to defending WAC Champion New Mexico State and closed out the weekend with a 6-1 loss to Seattle.
 
CSU captured an early 1-0 advantage in the NMSU match after winning the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches.
 
The No. 1 tandem of sophomore Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) and freshman Gabriel Niculescu (Bucharest, Romania) continued their recent winning ways after they defeated Strahinja Trecakov and Christofer Goncalves by a score of 6-2. Sophomore Rohan Wattley (Slough, United Kingdom/Burnham) and freshman Felix Savard (Laval, QC Canada/Saint-Gabriel) then clinched the point after capturing a 6-4 victory over Liam Goldberg and Stijin de Haan.
 
After the Aggies captures a pair of singles wins at No. 2 and No. 3, Savard evened the match at 2-2 after posting a straight-set win in the No. 1 flight over Trecakov by identical 6-4 scores for the Cougars' lone singles point.
 
In the Seattle match, Niculescu and Gonzalez extended their winning streak to four consecutive matches at No. 1 doubles after claiming a dominating 6-1 win over Tanner Berkabile and Matt Alderson.
 
Gonzalez followed the doubles win with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles over Connor Leahy.
 
CSU returns to action on Wednesday, April 13 with its final home match of the regular season against UIC beginning at 4 p.m.
