CSU Men’s Tennis Opens WAC Play with 7-0 Defeat to UMKC

Freshman Gabriel Niculescu fell in a three-set battle at No. 3 singles in CSU's WAC opener against Missouri-Kansas City
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Chicago State men's tennis opened Western Athletic Conference play here today with a 7-0 defeat to Missouri-Kansas City in the conference opener for both teams at the NMSU Tennis Complex on the campus of New Mexico State.
 
The Kangaroos (10-6, 1-0) captured an early 1-0 lead after winning matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles slots.
 
Freshman Gabriel Niculescu (Bucharest, Romania) battled hard for CSU (2-12, 0-1) in his No. 2 singles match against Andrey Smirnov after falling in the first set (2-6) and winning the second set (6-3) before dropping a 6-3 decision in the third set.
 
The Cougars close out the first WAC cluster tomorrow morning at the NMSU Tennis Complex against Grand Canyon with a start time of 8:30 a.m., Mountain Time.
