Men’s Tennis Falls at Detroit in Close Match

Felix Savard captured a three-set win at No. 3 singles on Sunday at Detroit
DETROIT – The Chicago State men's tennis team returned to action on Sunday here with a close 4-3 defeat to host Detroit at the Franklin Athletic Club.
 
The Cougars took an early 1-0 lead in the match after capturing the doubles point. Sophomore Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) and freshman Gabriel Niculescu (Bucharest, Romania) posted a 6-1 victory over Griffin Mertz and Chance Conley at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 2 duo of sophomore Gonzalo Martinez (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo) and freshman Felix Savard (Laval, QC Canada/Saint-Gabriel) defeated Patryk Koscielski and Nicholas Solarewicz by a score of 6-3.
 
In the singles matches, Savard earned a three set win over Solarewicz at No. 3 via scores of 6-4, 6-7 and 10-5.
 
Martinez followed that with a three-set battle of his own at No. 4 against Ismail Kadyrov by coming back from a 6-3 defeat in the first set to easily win the final two sets by scores of 6-3 and 6-2.
 
CSU opens Western Athletic Conference play in Las Cruces, N.M., on March 25-26 with a pair of matches against Missouri-Kansas City and Grand Canyon.
