LAS VEGAS – Seventh-seeded Chicago State women's basketball battled hard during Wednesday's Western Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal against the tournament's second seed UTRGV at the Orleans Arena, but it fell to the Vaqueros by a score of 60-52.

"I just want to say that I'm very, very proud of my team. We fought very hard and we were focused (tonight). We executed the game plan and just fell a little short," CSU head coach Angela Jackson said in a post-game press conference.

The first quarter started off as a defensive battle between the two teams before the Vaqueros captured a 13-9 lead to end the stanza. Down 19-12 with 7:30 left in the second quarter, CSU came back with 19-9 scoring drive down the stretch to head into the break with a 31-28 advantage.

The Green and White scored seven of the first nine points scored in the third quarter to gain their biggest lead of the contest at 38-30 on a three-pointer from junior Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) at the 6:06 mark.

UTRGV then tallied seven of the next 11 points in a near four-minute span to slice its deficit to 42-37 with 1:56 left in the quarter, but a pair of offensive putback baskets from senior Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) brought CSU's advantage to 46-37 at the end of the quarter. A 22-6 mark in the fourth quarter helped the Vaqueros capture the win, which included a 19-4 scoring run in the final seven minutes.

CSU had three players score in double figures for the game with Harris scoring a team-high 13 points 4-of-6 shooting from the field and connected on all three of her attempts from three-point range. Murphy recorded her WAC-leading 12th double-double of the season with 13 rebounds and 12 points, and freshman Sh'Toya Sanders (Fort Wayne, Ind./Wayne) finished with 12 points

Like CSU, UTRGV also had three players that scored in double figures with Shawnté Goff leading the way with a game-high 22 points.

The Cougars finish the season with a season record of 4-25.
