Men’s Tennis Falls at NIU, 5-2

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Chicago State men's tennis team began its weekend slate here Friday evening as it fell to host Northern Illinois by a score of 5-2 at the Boylan Tennis Center.
 
Despite the hosts claiming the doubles points, the Green and White captured a win at No. 1 doubles as freshman Gabriel Niculescu (Bucharest, Romania) and sophomore Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) posted a close 7-6 win over Carlos Manzanas and Austin Russell.
 
Gonzalez continued his winning ways in singles as he defeated Russell in the No. 4 matchup via scores of 7-5 and 6-4.
 
Fellow sophomore Gonzalo Martinez (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo) then tallied a dominating 6-2, 6-1 win over Erich Schuette at No. 5 singles.
 
Chicago State returns to the H-F Racquet and Tennis Club on Saturday with a couple of home matches against SIU Edwardsville and Purdue. The SIUE match begins at 10 a.m. and the Purdue contest will start at 6 p.m.
