Women’s Basketball Defeats Seattle, 57-49, for Second Straight Win

CHICAGO – Chicago State women's basketball captured its second straight win after defeating visiting Seattle by a score of 57-49 in a Western Athletic Conference contest tonight at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center.
 
The Redhawks began the game with a 4-0 advantage with 6:26 in the first quarter on a jumper from Taelor Ross, but the home team would force two ties (7-7 and 9-9) in a two-plus minute span before SU scored four of the final five points to end the stanza with a 13-10 lead.
 
CSU (4-18, 2-6) then scored seven unanswered in the first two minutes of the second period to capture a 17-13 lead on a fast break layup by senior Jasmine Sanders (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) at the 7:48 mark. The two teams then battled through two ties and a lead change in five minutes before the Green and White finished with a quick 8-4 scoring drive to head into intermission with a 27-23 leading margin.
 
In the third quarter, the Cougars would go on an 18-9 scoring run in a seven-plus minute span to take their biggest lead of the game at 45-32 on a three-pointer from junior Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) at 2:34. Harris and redshirt sophomore Jessica Cerda (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) each scored six points during that run for CSU.
 
Seattle (9-14, 3-5) then went on to score 15 of the next 22 points in six-plus minutes to slice its deficit to 52-47 on a steal and a layup from Jacinta Beckley with 3:40 remaining in the fourth quarter. The home team would later hit five of six from the free throw line and run out the clock in the final minutes in preserving the win.
 
Harris tied a pair of career highs with 19 points and six rebounds to lead Chicago State, while Cerda added 11 points and equaled a career high with five assists. Sanders contributed a career-high 10 rebounds, six points and four assists.
 
Ross paced Seattle with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds to go along with two blocked shots.
 
The Green and White conclude their homestand on Saturday afternoon against CSU Bakersfield in a WAC Digital Network broadcast with the opening tip set for 7 p.m.
