Women’s Basketball Closes Non-Conference Slate against NJIT

CHICAGO – The Chicago State women's basketball team closed out its non-conference schedule here this afternoon by falling to former Great West Conference foe NJIT, 57-42, at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center.
 
The visitors captured an early 7-2 lead at the 6:47 mark of the first quarter on a jumper from Alana Dudley and later increased its lead to 14-4 following Kelly Guarino's three-pointer with 3:50 remaining. CSU (0-14) then scored six unanswered points in a minute on back-to-back triples from sophomore Kaylee Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) to pull within 14-10 at 2:50 before NJIT scored four of the final six points to close the quarter with an 18-12 lead.
 
An 11-0 run in the first four and a half minutes of the second quarter brought the Highlanders' leading margin to 29-12 with 5:35 left in the stanza that ended with Tatianna Torres splitting a pair of free throws. The Cougars then posted an 8-3 scoring drive down the stretch to slice their deficit to 32-20 entering halftime.
 
NJIT (7-7) held on steadfast to a 14-point lead for most of the third quarter until the Green and White tallied a 10-3 scoring drive in the final two minutes to pull within seven points at 39-32 at the close of the quarter. The Highlanders went on to outscore CSU in the final quarter by an 18-10 margin for the win.
 
Redshirt junior Jessica Cerda (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) scored 12 points to lead the Cougars and tied a career high with six rebounds, while Allen finished with 11 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season to go along with three steals.
 
Torres recorded game highs of 18 points and seven steals for the Highlanders.
 
CSU opens Western Athletic Conference play on Jan. 5 with a trip to Texas to battle the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in a live broadcast on the WAC Digital Network with a start time of 7 p.m.
