Cougars Fall to Western Illinois in Return to JCC, 54-50

CHICAGO – Chicago State women's basketball made its return to the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center this afternoon as it fell to rival Western Illinois in a close game by a score of 54-50.
 
The Cougars opened the game by holding a 16-5 advantage in the first quarter before withstanding a 15-10 deficit in the second quarter and would go into halftime ahead by a 26-20 margin. The Leathernecks posted a 19-7 advantage in the third quarter to claim a 39-33 lead heading into the fourth.
 
With WIU ahead 42-37 at the 8:18 mark of the fourth on a three-pointer by Morgan Blumer, the Green and White went on a 13-8 scoring drive in a seven-minute span to even the score at 50-50 that ended with sophomore Kaylee Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) hitting a pair of free throws with 1:09 remaining in the game. The visitors closed out the contest by scoring four points down the stretch to earn the victory.
 
Allen produced her second double-double of the season as she tallied a game-high 18 points and set a career high by grabbing 11 rebounds to lead CSU (0-11). She also produced a season-best three blocked shots, three assists and three steals while connecting on 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
 
Senior Cailin Nix (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) added 11 points with a career-high six steals, five rebounds and five assists, and redshirt senior Jessica Cerda (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) also recorded 11 points. Harris finished with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting and seven rebounds.
 
Western Illinois (9-3), who like CSU had three players score in double figures, were led by Taylor Higginbotham's 14 points and seven boards.
 
The Cougars conclude their short homestand on Wednesday, Dec. 21 against Western Michigan in a live broadcast on WVON AM Radio with a start time of 7 p.m.
