Cerda, Nix Each Record Career-Best 22 Points at Loyola

CHICAGO – Redshirt junior Jessica Cerda (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) and senior Cailin Nix (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) each recorded career scoring highs of 22 points to lead the Chicago State women's basketball team as it dropped a close 59-54 decision to host Loyola this afternoon at Gentile Arena.
 
Cerda connected on 9 of her 18 field goal attempts with four of those being three-pointers and Nix shot 10-of-16 from the field while both players recorded two steals apiece.
 
The home team took an early 8-4 lead at the 7:20 mark of the first quarter following a layup from Katie Salmon before CSU scored seven unanswered points over three minutes to take an 11-8 lead with 4:26 remaining after Cerda drained a three from the left corner. Loyola then closed out the quarter by posting a 9-0 run to post a 17-1

CSU bounced back in the second quarter by using a 10-3 scoring drive that lasted three minutes to even the score at 21-21 at the 7:04 mark after Nix scored on a layup off an offensive rebound. After the Ramblers recaptured the lead at 27-21 with 2:47 left in the quarter after tallying six straight points, the Green and White scored the final five points on a Cerda three and a Nix layup to pull within a point at 27-26 heading into the halftime break.
 
The Ramblers opened the third stanza by scoring seven of the first eight points played to hike their leading margin to 34-28 at 7:12 after Williams canned another three. CSU then went on a 14-7 run in the final seven minutes to gain a 42-41 lead that ended with Cerda hitting a last second mid-range jumper before the buzzer.
 
Cerda and Nix each recorded a layup at the beginning of the fourth to increase CSU's lead to 46-41 with nine minutes to go before LU would post a 16-4 scoring drive over a six-minute span to retake the lead at 57-50 with two minutes to go. The Cougars pulled within three points at 57-54 with under a minute to go on a pair of free throws from sophomore Kaylee Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) and a Nix layup, but two Kiana Coomber free throws sealed the win for the home team.
 
Allen finished with eight points and drained all six of her attempts at the free throw line to go along with five rebounds for CSU (0-9). Freshman Alexandria Cliff (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and junior Destiny Harris (Crete, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) dished out a game-leading four assists.
 
Loyola (1-8) had three players score in double figures in the contest with Brandi Segars scoring 14 points and Salmon led all players with 12 rebounds.
 
CSU concludes its four-game road swing on Wednesday, Dec. 14 with an ESPN3 live broadcast at Milwaukee with the opening tip set for 7 p.m.
