Kansas State Game Notes

CHICAGO -

OPENING TIP – The Chicago State women's basketball team heads to Kansas to kick off its 2016-17 season on Friday evening against host Kansas State at Bramlage Coliseum with the opening tip set for 5:30 p.m.

SCOUTING CSU – CSU returns seven letterwinners from last season's team, including three starters in sophomore guard/forward Kaylee Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods), senior guard Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) and sophomore forward/center Sh'Toya Sanders (Fort Wayne, Ind./Wayne). Also returning to the team this season are senior guard Caitlin Nix, redshirt junior guard Jessica Cerda (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood), and sophomore guards Nadia Miller (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) and Tiana Thomas (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah).

SCOUTING KSU – Kansas State, led by third-year head coach Jeff Mitte, welcomes back nine letterwinners from its 2015-16 squad that finished 19-13 while advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. K-State posted a pair of home exhibition wins over Washburn (66-31) and Newman (100-33) last weekend. The top returning player for the Wildcats is senior center Breanna Lewis, who received Preseason All-Big 12 Conference accolades after averaging 16.7 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.6 blocked shots per game a year ago.

SERIES HISTORY – Friday's season-opening showdown between CSU and K-State will be the second all-time meeting on the hardwood after the Wildcats captured a 63-54 win at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago on Dec. 5, 2015 that featured an unfortunate power outage that lasted an hour and a half before concluding in the Jacoby Dickens Center.

NEWBIES - The Green and White also welcome two newcomers to the team in freshman forward Alexandria Cliff (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) and junior guard Destiny Harris (Crete, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor).

BALANCED RETURNS - The Green and White brings back 70 percent of its blocked shots, 68 percent of its scoring and 67 percent of its steals from last season.

BLOCK PARTY - As a team, Chicago State finsihed second in the WAC  in blocked shots last season after recording 117 blocks for an average of four swats per game. Sanders led the team with 47 blocks at an average of 1.6 per game which ranked her second individually among the conference leaders.

VERSATILE OPPOSITION - The Cougars will take on nine opponents this season that participated in postseason tournaments last year in Kansas State (NCAA), New Mexico State (NCAA),  University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (WNIT), Northwestern (WNIT), Milwaukee (WNIT), Wright State (WNIT), Ball State (WNIT), Grand Canyon (WBI) and Western Illinois (WBI).

UP NEXT – The Cougars begin a two-game homestand at the JCC on Wednesday, Nov. 16 against rival Valparaiso with the opening tip set for 7 p.m.
