CSU Bakersfield Game Notes (PDF)

OPENING TIP – The Chicago State women's basketball team kicks off the second phase of its 2015-16 schedule with the start of Western Athletic Conference play beginning Thursday night on the road at CSU Bakersfield with the tip-off slated for 7 p.m., Mountain Time.

SCOUTING CSU – CSU heads into conference play with a 2-12 season record and looks to break a four-game losing skid. The Green and White opened the New Year with a 55-48 loss to Milwaukee at home last Sunday afternoon with senior forward Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) leading the way offensively with a career-best 24 points. Murphy is posting team-high numbers of 13.4 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists a game this season, while freshman guard/forward Kaylee Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) is averaging 10.6 points per game to rank second on the team. Freshman forward/center Sh'Toya Sanders (Fort Wayne, Ind./Wayne) leads Chicago State in blocked shots (WAC-leading 1.6 per game) and steals (1.7 a game) in addition to being second in rebounds with 6.6 boards per game.

SCOUTING CSUB – CSU Bakersfield has posted a 3-12 record on the year entering Thursday's conference opener with CSU, but has split its last four games that included a dominating 65-39 home win last Sunday against UC Davis. Senior forward and Preseason Second Team All-WAC honoree Batabe Zempare leads the Roadrunners with 11.3 points and 9.6 rebounds per game on the year, while redshirt junior forward Erika Williams is second in scoring at 9.9 points per contest. Senior guard Alyssa Shannon, the reigning WAC Player of the Week, rank first on the team in assists (65 – 4.3 apg), steals (27 – 1.8 spg) and free throw percentage (.896) to go along with averaging 9.7 points a game.

SERIES HISTORY – CSUB currently holds an 8-1 advantage in the all-time series with Chicago State which includes an eight-game winning streak since March 2011. The Roadrunners captured all three meetings with the Green and White last season, including a 77-35 win in the quarterfinals of the WAC Tournament on March 11, 2015 in Las Vegas.

ALMOST GRAND – Senior Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) is closing in on scoring 1,000 career points as she has 903 points heading into this week's action. She is now 97 points shy of accomplishing the feat and 68 points on moving to 10th place on CSU's D-I career scoring list.

FAB FROSH – Freshman Sh'Toya Sanders (Fort Wayne, Ind./Wayne) has continued to make good adjustments in her transition to college basketball. The Fort Wayne, Ind. native has posted averages of 11.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.4 steals over CSU's last five games while shooting 52 percent from the field.

DOUBLE DIP – Murphy has shown a knack for recording double-doubles this season by ranking eighth in this week's NCAA Division I rankings with eight. She posted 14 rebounds and 11 points on Dec. 30 against Northern Illinois.

UP NEXT - The Cougars close out their WAC opening weekend swing on Saturday afternoon at Seattle. The tip-off from the Connolly Complex is set for 4 p.m., Pacific Time.
