Sanders’ Double-Double Propels CSU Women’s Hoops to Double OT Win over UMKC

CHICAGO – Freshman Sh'Toya Sanders (Fort Wayne, Ind./Wayne) tallied game highs of 22 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots to lead Chicago State women's basketball in capturing a thrilling 77-72 double overtime win over Missouri-Kansas City in a Western Athletic Conference home contest this afternoon at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center.
 
Sanders shot 8-of-11 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line for the Cougars (3-18, 1-6), who had four players score in double figures to snap a 10-game losing streak.
 
CSU was down by a 35-26 margin at the half before going on a spirited run in the third quarter in outscoring the visitors by an 18-10 margin to pull within a point at 45-44 on a fast break layup by Sanders at the 1:39 mark.
 
The run continued in the fourth quarter with the Green and White gaining four-point advantages at the 5:17 (51-47) and 4:47 marks (56-52) before the Kangaroos scored eight unanswered points to reclaim a 60-56 lead with 19 seconds left in regulation.
 
After senior Jasmine Sanders (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) hit a pair of free throws to pull the home team within two points at the 15-second mark, freshman Kaylee Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) sent the game into extra time after blocking UMKC's Kiana Law with nine seconds left them grabbed the rebounds and went coast-to-coast in converting a layup as time expired. 
 
CSU had held a three-point lead at 65-62 in the first overtime when redshirt sophomore Jessica Cerda (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) nailed a jumper at the 2:37 mark, but the visitors scored the final three points to even the score with 34 seconds remaining before a buzzer-beating layup was waived off that would have given them the win.
 
The Cougars outscored the Kangaroos in the final period by a 12-7 margin and held on down the stretch by hitting three of its final four free throws for the win.
 
Cerda finished with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field and dished out a career-high five assists. Allen contributed 14 points, six boards and tied a season high with five steals, while junior Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) added 12 with three assists and three steals for the Green and White.
 
Law produced a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead five players in double figures for UMKC (7-13, 2-5).
 
The Cougars continue their homestand on Thursday, Feb. 4 with a WAC game against Seattle with a start time of 7 p.m.
