Men’s Tennis Opens 2016 Season with Weekend Road Swing

Sophomore Christian Gonzalez earned a singles win at IUPUI and a doubles win at No. 26 Northwestern in CSU's season-opening weekend
CHICAGO – Chicago State men's tennis kicked off its 2016 campaign this past weekend with a pair of road contests in the Midwest.
 
The Cougars (0-2) fell to IUPUI in their season opener last Saturday by a 5-2 margin before dropping a 4-0 decision to No. 26 Northwestern Sunday in Evanston, Ill.
 
Sophomores Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) and Gonzalo Martinez (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo) claimed thrilling three-set singles wins for the Green and White in the IUPUI match. Gonzalez knocked off Bradley Leutschwager at No. 4 singles by scores of 6-7, 7-6 and 10-3, while Martinez defeated Louis Sachs in the No. 5 singles contest with scores of 7-6, 4-6 and 10-4.
 
Gonzalez then teamed with freshman Gabriel Niculescu (Bucharest, Romania) to gain a 6-4 victory over NU's Ben Vandixhorn and Michael Lorenzini at No. 2 doubles.
 
The Cougars return to action on Jan. 23 at Illinois State with a start time of 6 p.m.
