Murphy Posts Double-Double in WAC Game at Seattle

SEATTLE – Senior Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) tallied her ninth double-double of the season Saturday afternoon as the Chicago State women's basketball team dropped a 59-45 decision to host Seattle in a Western Athletic Conference contest at SU's Connolly Center.

Murphy finished with 14 points and grabbed a game-leading 13 rebounds to go along with dishing out a game-high four assists for CSU (2-14, 0-2).

The Green and White broke a 16-16 tie after the first quarter by outscoring SU in the second stanza by a close 13-11 margin to take a 29-27 halftime lead after Murphy scored a layup with five seconds left.

Murphy canned a jumper at the 5:33 mark of the third quarter to give CSU its biggest lead of the game at 37-32 before the Redhawks went on a 10-2 scoring drive to finish the period with a 42-39 lead. After the Cougars tied the score at 42-all with 8:40 left in the fourth quarter, Seattle scored 17 unanswered points in a five-minute span to capture a 59-42 advantage and cruised to the win.

Freshman Kaylee Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) and junior Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) each added nine points for the Green and White, while freshman Sh'Toya Sanders (Fort Wayne, Ind./Wayne) contributed eight points and five rebounds.

Seattle (8-9, 2-0) was led by Taelor Ross' game-leading 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field.

The Cougars open a two-game WAC homestand at the Jones Convocation Center against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m.
