Cougars Fall to Kansas State, 63-54, to Close Homestand

CHICAGO – The Chicago State women's basketball team dropped a 63-54 decision to Big 12 Conference member Kansas State at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center Saturday afternoon as it closed out a three-game homestand.
 
The home team opened the first quarter with an early 6-2 lead following a three-pointer from junior Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) before KSU went on a 15-2 scoring run for the remainder of the stanza to gain a 17-8 advantage.
 
The Green and White came back in the second quarter by scoring eight of the first 13 points to close within 22-16 after junior Caitlin Nix drained a long three at the 6:19 mark, but the Wildcats ended the first half with a 12-6 scoring drive to take a 34-22 lead into halftime.
 
Kansas State increased its leading margin to 40-26 early in the third quarter before CSU scored five unanswered points to close within nine points at 40-31 with under five minutes to go until the power in the JCC shut down the game for over an hour.
 
After a delay that lasted an hour, the game was moved to the Jacoby Dickens Center where the Wildcats hiked their lead to 54-41 at the end of the stanza. The Cougars then posted a 13-7 run in an eight-plus minute span to close within 61-54 with 1:05 left in the fourth and would get no closer the rest of the way.
 
Freshman Kaylee Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) paced CSU (1-7) with 13 points and two steals on the day. Senior Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) added 12 points and dished out a game-high four assists, while Harris tallied nine points and senior Jasmine Sanders (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) grabbed five rebounds.
 
KSU had three players score in double figures with Breanna Lewis scoring a game-leading 21 points.
 
CSU are idle until Dec. 12 when it heads to Indiana for a road game at IPFW with a start time of 12 p.m., Eastern Time.
