Harris Leads Cougars in 75-71 Home Win Over Morehead State

CHICAGO – Junior Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) tallied a season-high 16 points to lead four Chicago State women's basketball players that scored in double figures as the host Cougars won their first game of the season Saturday afternoon after capturing a 75-71 victory over Morehead State at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center.
 
Harris also dished off a career-best five assists to go along with grabbing four rebounds and shot 5-of-10 from the field (4-of-8 from three-point range) for the Green and White.
 
The Eagles (3-3) broke an early 11-11 tie at the five-minute mark of the first quarter with a 9-2 run to gain a 20-13 lead, but CSU captured the second quarter by a 23-19 margin to slice its deficit to three points at 39-36 heading into intermission.
 
Both teams battled through nine lead changes and seven ties for over nine minutes during the third quarter before senior Jasmine Sanders (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) connected on a three-pointer with three seconds remaining to give the Green and White a 59-56 advantage.
 
The Cougars (1-5) tallied seven of the first nine points of the fourth quarter to gain their biggest lead of the contest at 66-58 with 7:09 left after senior Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) scored on a fast break layup. Morehead State then pulled within a point at 70-69 with an 11-4 scoring drive through a four-minute span, but CSU iced the game by scoring five of the final seven points to seal the win.
 
Jasmine Sanders (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) contributed 14 points and posted a season-best four steals, while freshman Sh'Toya Sanders (Fort Wayne, Ind./Wayne) added 12 points and notched a season-high five blocked shots.
 
Murphy recorded her fourth double-double of the season with a game-leading 12 rebounds and 11 points, and junior Caitlin Nix finished with season highs of nine points, five rebounds and five assists.
 
Shay Steele led four Morehead State players in double figures as she matched Harris for game-high scoring honors with 16 points and added three blocks.
 
CSU continues its homestand on Wednesday night against Bradley in a live broadcast on the WAC Digital Network and WVON 1690 AM beginning at 7 p.m.
