Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. – The Chicago State University Cougars women's basketball team (2-12, 0-1 WAC) opened Western Athletic Conference play with a 75-60 loss to the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs (8-8, 1-0 WAC) on Saturday at the Jones Convocation Center.
Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) led the Cougars with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Chanel Wilson-Stewart (Hillside, Ill./St. Joseph's) had 10 points and five blocks.
The Broncs jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the opening four minutes. The Cougars responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead on a pair of
Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) free throws three minutes later, but Brittany Bush hit three straight baskets and one free throw as part of an 11-0 run by the Broncs that made the score 18-11.
The Broncs pushed their lead back out to nine at 22-13 with 8:19 remaining in the first half, but the Cougars came back to tie the game at 27-27 on a layup by
Tashuna Brown (New York, N.Y/Randolph) five minutes later.
The Cougars took the lead back on a three by
Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) that made it 32-29, and they held that lead until the Broncs hit back-to-back threes in the middle of a 10-0 run that saw the Broncs go up 43-38 early in the second half.
The Cougars led again at 49-47 after a
Jasmine Sanders (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) three, but
Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir hit a layup and a three as the Broncs took a lead that they did not relinquish.
The Cougars will look for their first conference win on Saturday January 17th as they take on UMKC. The tip-off is set for 2pm at the Jones Convocation Center.
