Seattle – The Chicago State Cougars closed out their 2013-14 regular season with a 75-63 loss to the Seattle Redhawks at the Connolly Center on Saturday afternoon (March 8).
The 2012-13 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) regular season champion got off to a quick start, leading 9-0 in the first four minutes of the game. The Cougars were kept at arms' length until an 8-1 run cut their deficit to three at 23-20 with 8:58 to go. Seattle responded by scoring 13 of the next 16 points to push their advantage to its largest of the first stanza at 39-23 with 2:53 remaining. The Redhawks would go in to half-time leading 43-32.
Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) paced the Cougars in the first half with 10 points. Sylvia Shepard of Seattle led all scorers with 12 in the first stanza.
After exchanging baskets to begin the second half,
Angela Jackson's squad cut the Seattle lead to nine at 50-41 after freshman
Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney)' three-pointer with 13:44 to go. They could get as close as seven points after a three-pointer by freshman
Cailin Nix (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) made the score 54-47 with 10:46 left in the game. Seattle answered by going on a 16-6 run over the next five minutes to put the game away.
CSU finished with four players in double-figures. Harris along with juniors
Tierra Williams (Detroit, Mich./Lathrup) and
Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) scored 14 points to lead the team. Sophomore
Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) contributed 10 points, seven rebounds, four blocks and three steals. The Cougars tied their season-highs in three-pointers (seven) and blocks (six) in the game.
Seattle's Kacie Sowell led all scorers with 21 points. Sowell and her teammate Wilma Afunugo led all players with eight rebounds. Shepard pitched in 16 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals in the victory.
The Cougars fell to 3-26 on the season and 0-16 in the WAC. Seattle improved their record to 14-15 and 9-7 in the conference. CSU will take on Idaho in the first round of the WAC Tournament on Wednesday. The game is scheduled to begin 12 pm PT.Â
