Omaha, Neb. - Despite junior
Luis Ulloa (Guayaquil, Ecuador/)'s victory at No. 4 singles and in doubles with freshman
Uros Pajic (Smederevo, Seribia/Maple Valley), the Chicago State men's tennis team fell 5-2 to the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks on Friday evening (March 28).
Ulloa won 7-6 (3), 6-2 over Colin Buckley for his seventh singles victory of the year. He and Pajic defeated Buckley and James McManus at No. 3 doubles 8-7 (7-4).
"I'm very proud of Luis," said head coach
Jack Barton. "He's been stepping up and playing well the last several matches."
Juniors
Julian Chavez (Bogota, Colombia/) and
Rashley Yeremia (Jakarta, Indonesia/) won at No. 2 doubles over Tyler Mercier and Nathan Greteman 8-6 which clinched the doubles point for the Cougars.
In other doubles action, juniors
Sergiu Muresan (Roman, Romania/) and
Mario Noboa (Santo Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador/) were defeated by Adam Dockery and Eric McKnight 8-4.
In singles play, Muresan was taken down by Mercier 6-4, 6-4. Noboa won the first set over Dockery, but lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Yeremia won the second set against Eric Anderson, but went down 6-0, 2-6, 6-2. McManus was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Chavez and McKnight had a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over Pajic.
"This (loss) was very disappointing," said Barton. "We were in a position to win, but UNO was mentally stronger than us."
The loss drops Chicago State to 3-16 on the season while Nebraska-Omaha improved to 6-11 on the year. The Cougars continue their Omaha road trip by taking on Creighton tomorrow (March 29). The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
