Chicago, Ill. - The Chicago State women's basketball team lost their final home game of the season to the Grand Canyon Antelopes 69-38 on Saturday afternoon (March 1).
Sophomore
Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) was one of three Cougars to lead the team with eight points. Murphy also grabbed seven rebounds, tied her career-high with five blocks and had three steals. It's the 13th straight game in which she has had at least five rebounds.
Freshmen
Cailin Nix (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) and
Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) were the other two CSU players with eight points. Junior
Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) added in six points, nine rebounds and two assists in the loss.
It was an offensive struggle in the first half as each team shot under 35 percent from the floor. GCU got their offense going towards the end of the half and went into half-time with a 31-12 lead.
Grand Canyon outscored
Angela Jackson's squad in the second half 38-26. Nix scored all eight of her points in the second stanza on 4-7 shooting (57.1 percent). Murphy pitched in six points, three rebounds, three steals and a block in the second half.
Asha McDonnell led the Lopes with 12 points off the bench. Johnna Brown was two points shy of a double-double (eight points and 11 rebounds) while Kaitlyn Peterson had 10 points, a team-high six assists and five rebounds in the victory.
Chicago State fell to 3-24 and 0-14 in the Western Athletic Conference while Grand Canyon improved to 19-8 and 8-6 in conference play. The Cougars wrap up their season on the road vs. Idaho and Seattle. They take on the conference-leading Idaho Vandals on Thursday (March 6) with tip-off set for 6 p.m. PT.
