CHICAGO - The Chicago State women's basketball team suffered a 74-64 loss to the New Mexico State Aggies Saturday afternoon (Feb. 15) at the Jones Convocation Center.
Sophomore
Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) set career-highs with 19 points and five blocks while also pulling down 13 rebounds. It's her fourth double-double of the season and the seventh of her career.
Freshman
Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) also set a career-high with 15 points. Junior
Tashuna Brown (New York, N.Y/Randolph) tied her career-high 10 points and added in seven rebounds in the loss.
In a back and forth battle, the first seven minutes of the game had five lead changes and four ties. After Harris hit two free throws to give the Cougars a 13-12 lead at the 12:47 mark, the Aggies would take the lead for the rest of half. New Mexico State's lead stretched to 11 after a fast break bucket by Danesia Williamson made the score 31-20 with 4:13 to go. Freshman
Jessica Cerda (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) responded with a three-pointer on the next possession and the Cougars went into halftime trailing 38-31.
The Aggies converted 12 CSU first half turnovers into 14 points while they only turned the ball over five times in the first stanza.
The second half scoring started with a Sasha Weber three-pointer for the Aggies, but the Cougars responded with a quick 5-0 run to make the score 41-35 with 19:01 to go. With New Mexico State leading 45-38, the WAC foe went on a 21-5 run over an eight-minute span pushing their lead to 66-43 with 8:17 left, their biggest advantage of the game. The Cougars didn't go away, outscoring the Aggies 21-8 over the final eight minutes, but it was not enough.
Sophomore
Jasmine Sanders (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) led Chicago State with 10 second half points. For the game, the Cougars made a season-high 21 free throws and tied their season-high with six blocks.
Sasha Weber's 19 points and six assists led the Aggies. Abby Scott scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench in the victory.
CSU falls to 3-21 on the season and 0-11 in the Western Athletic Conference. New Mexico State improves to 9-16 and 6-6 in conference play. The Cougars head on the road for a brief two-game trip beginning with Utah Valley on Thursday (Feb. 20). The game is scheduled for 7:00 PM MT.
