CHICAGO – The UTPA Broncs used a 19-7 run to pull away from the Chicago State women's basketball team in the second half and win 75-52 at the Jones Convocation Center on Thursday evening (Feb. 13).
Freshman
Jessica Cerda (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) set a career-high with 11 points while junior
Tierra Williams (Detroit, Mich./Lathrup) also scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds. Junior
Tashuna Brown (New York, N.Y/Randolph) finished one rebound shy of a double-double with a career-high 10 points and nine rebounds.
The game started with several lead changes as Cougars took a 7-6 lead after a freshman
Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) layup at 17:29 mark. The Broncs went on a 13-2 run to take a 19-9 Â advantage which led to a Chicago State timeout with 13:20 remaining.
Angela Jackson's squad would answer by cutting the deficit to four at 21-17 after a Cerda three-pointer with 10:22 to go. Over the final ten minutes of the first stanza, the Broncs would outscore the Cougars 19-5 and go into halftime with a 40-25 advantage.
Shawnte' Goff's 11 points led UTPA as the team shot 16-26 (61.5 percent)Â in the first half.
The teams traded baskets to begin the second half before the Cougars went on a 5-0 spurt to cut the deficit to 10 (44-34) with 13:45 left. CSU would not get any closer as the Broncs pulled away with a 19-7 run over the next six minutes of action.
The Broncs finished with 27 points off of 25 Chicago State turnovers.
UTPA had four scorers finish in double-figures led by Brittany Bush's 16 points. KaeLynn Boyd had 11 points, six assists, three steals and a block in the victory.
Chicago State falls to 3-20 on the season and 0-10 in the Western Athletic Conference. UTPA improves to 12-12 and 6-5 in conference play. The Cougars get back on the court Saturday afternoon (Feb. 15) when they take on New Mexico State at the Jones Convocation Center. Tip-off is set for 2pm.Â
