Tierra Williams (Detroit, Mich./Lathrup) scored a team-high 17 points, but the Chicago State Cougars fell to the Grand Canyon Antelopes 84-53 at the GCU Arena on Thursday evening (Jan. 30).

Cailin Nix (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) finished with 14 points while sophomore
Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) finished one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
The Lopes jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but Chicago State answered with a 10-0 run to take a 10-6 advantage after a Williams' three-pointer at the 15:51 mark of the first half. After Grand Canyon retook the lead at 13-12, the Cougars scored eight straight points to take their largest lead of the half at 20-13 with 9:09 remaining. The Lopes ended the first half on a 23-6 run as the Cougars had eight turnovers in the final nine minutes of the first stanza.
In the second half, Grand Canyon pushed their lead to double digits for the first time after a Deanna Daniels layup made the score 39-28 with 18:17 to go.The Cougars would cut the deficit to nine at 39-30 after a Williams layup at the 16:40 mark, but would get no closer. Grand Canyon shot 18 of 32 (56.3 percent) from the floor in the second half to put the game away.
Kaitlyn Peterson scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Lopes. Deanna Daniels added in 18 points and Johana Brown had 13 points and nine rebounds in the victory.
The Cougars fell to 3-18 and 0-8 in the Western Athletic Conference while Grand Canyon improved to 14-6 and 3-4 in the conference. Chicago State returns home to the Jones Convocation Center to take on Kansas City next Saturday (Feb. 8). Tip-off is scheduled for 2pm.Â
