Muresan Picks Up Victory As Cougars Fall 6-1 To NIU

Junior Sergiu Muresan picked up a singles victory today (Jan. 24) vs. NIU.
Rockford, Ill. – Junior Sergiu Muresan (Roman, Romania/) picked up a singles victory, but it was not enough as the Chicago State Men's Tennis team fell to the Northern Illinois Huskies 6-1 on Friday afternoon (Jan. 24). 

Muresan defeated Axel Lagerlof 4-6, 6-3 (10-2) at No. 1 singles to pick up a point for the Cougars. Freshman Uros Pajic (Smederevo, Seribia/Maple Valley) fell 6-1, 6-3 to Dor Amir while junior Rashley Yeremia (Jakarta, Indonesia/) fell to Carlos Manzanas by the same score. Junior Julian Chavez (Bogota, Colombia/) lost 6-0, 6-0 to Fred Cadieux. Junior Mario Noboa (Santo Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador/) was defeated 6-3, 6-1 by Jovan Zeljkovic and junior Luis Ulloa (Guayaquil, Ecuador/) was beaten by Simon Formont 6-2, 6-2. 

The Chicago State duo of Noboa and Muresan was taken out by Amir and Lagerlof by a score of 6-4.In other doubles action, Pajic and Chavez suffered a 6-1 loss at the hands of Matt Lynch and Jovan Zeljkovic.CSU's Yeremia and Ulloa took home a 6-1 loss to Formont and Cadieux to wrap up the scoring. 

Chicago State head coach Jack Barton was very happy for Muresan as he picked up the singles victory.

 "I'm really proud of Sergiu," said the fourth year head coach. "He (Muresan) started to trust himself and his shots which carried over to the rest of the match." 

The Cougars fell to 0-3 in the spring season while Northern Illinois improved 1-1. Jack Barton's squad gets right back on the court tomorrow as they take on IPFW in Rockford, Ill.  The match is set to begin at 10:00 AM CT.
