Murphy Has A Career-Night In Cougars’ 90-59 Loss To Bakersfield

Layne Murphy led the Cougars with 17 points and 15 rebounds.

CHICAGO – Sophomore Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) recorded career highs of 17 points and 15 rebounds in Chicago State women's basketball's 90-59 loss to Bakersfield on Thursday (Jan. 23) evening at the Jones Convocation Center in a Western Athletic Conference contest. It was her third double-double of the season.
 
Murphy did most of her work at the free throw line. She made a career-high nine freebies on 14 attempts from the charity stripe. She also added two blocks and a steal to her stat line.
 
Murphy was one of four Cougars in double-digits. Junior Tierra Williams (Detroit, Mich./Lathrup) scored 12 points. Freshmen Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) and Cailin Nix (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) each scored 11 points. Nix also added a career-high four assists.
 
The Roadrunners scored 50 points in the paint. Bakersfield's Tyonna Outland had a game-high 18 points. She was one of four Roadrunners in double-digits. Bakersfield finished 54.1 percent (33-of-61) from the floor while the Cougars shot 32.7 percent (18-of-55).
 
Bakersfield built a lead as large as 18 in the first 11 minutes of the game. The Cougars cut the deficit to just 10 points with 2:48 remaining following a 3-pointer by Harris. It was part of an 8-2 run. However Bakersfield ended the half on an 8-2 run of their own to push the Cougars' halftime deficit to 16 points at 42-26. The Roadrunners opened the second half on a 13-2 run to end the Cougars' hopes.
 
Bakersfield moves to 9-8 (3-2 WAC). The Cougars fall to 3-16 (0-6 WAC). Chicago State returns to the court on Saturday when Utah Valley visits the Jones Convocation Center for a 2 p.m. CT tip. The two teams are now WAC rivals but know each other well after spending the previous four years together in the Great West Conference.
