UTPA Broncs Hand Cougars 66-44 Loss

– Despite 20 points from junior Tierra Williams (Detroit, Mich./Lathrup), the Cougars lost to the UTPA Broncs 66-44 at the UTPA Fieldhouse on Saturday evening (Jan. 18).

The Broncs started the game fast, scoring the first eight points of the game. Chicago State answered with a 12-6 run to cut the lead to two at 14-12 after a Tierra Williams (Detroit, Mich./Lathrup) jumper with 11:30 to go. UTPA responded by pushing their advantage back up to eight at 23-15 with 8:37 remaining. The Cougars would score 13 of the next 15 points to take their first lead of the game 26-25 at the 3:07 mark. UTPA ended the first half on a 8-1 run to take a 33-27 lead into halftime.

UTPA jumped on the Cougars to begin the second half, scoring the first nine points to lead 42-27 with 16:12 left in the game. A Tierra Williams (Detroit, Mich./Lathrup)' three-pointer at the 8:34 mark cut the deficit to 11 at 53-42, but the Cougars couldn't get any closer. 

UTPA shot only 36.8 percent (21-57) from the floor while the Cougars shot 35.6 percent (16-45) in the loss. CSU had 24 turnovers which led to 22 UTPA points.

It was the 11th time in 12 games in which Tierra Williams (Detroit, Mich./Lathrup) had at least ten points. Junior Chanel Wilson-Stewart (Hillside, Ill./St. Joseph's) tied her career-high with four blocks while Tashuna Brown (New York, N.Y/Randolph) had a team-high and career-high 11 rebounds.  

Shawnte' Goff led the Broncs with 18 points while her teammate Brittany Bush finished with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Jasmine Thompson added in 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench in the victory.

Chicago State fell to 3-15 on the season and 0-5 in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) while UTPA improves 9-9 and 3-2 in the WAC. The Cougars come home to take on Bakersfield  at the Jones Convocation Center on Thursday (Jan. 23). Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM CT.
