HOUSTON – Chicago State women's basketball dropped a Great West Conference contest at Houston Baptist on Thursday (March 7) evening 92-57.
The loss doesn't affect the Cougars' push for the No. 3 seed in the GWC Tournament. A victory on Saturday over UTPA will give Chicago State the No. 3 seed in the tournament. A loss and the Cougars would be No. 4. Chicago State hosts the GWC Tournament March 14-16 at the Jones Convocation Center. Should Chicago State fall to No. 4 they would see the same Houston Baptist Huskies once again as the Huskies are locked into the No. 5 seed.
The Huskies led 9-7 in the early going on Thursday and started to pull away with an 8-0 run. Shanice Steenholdt and Rachel Arthur had back-to-back 3-pointers in the stretch. The Huskies opened a 24-12 lead before Chicago State missed their first field goal attempt. This was due to the Cougars making their first four attempts but committing eight turnovers in the game's first eight minutes. Houston Baptist took a lead as large as 20 points in the first half. Chicago State cut it down to 13 at 43-30 with 3:07 remaining in the first half. It would be as close as the Cougars would get. The Huskies scored nine of the final 12 points of the first half to lead 52-33 at the break. Houston Baptist kept the momentum going in the second.
The Huskies' Steenholdt scored 26 points of her game-high 33 points in the first half. Rachel Arthur added 17 points for Houston Baptist. Sophomore
Jasmine Collins (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) led the Cougars with a career-high 16 points. Sophomore
Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) added 11 points.
Houston Baptist improves to 6-22 (1-6 GWC). Chicago State falls to 4-24 (2-5 GWC). Chicago State's crucial contest at UTPA on Saturday (March 9) will start at 4:30 p.m. CT
