NEWARK, N.J. – Chicago State women's basketball dropped a Great West Conference road contest at NJIT on Saturday (March 2) afternoon 59-33. NJIT's victory avenges Chicago State's win over NJIT earlier this season.
While the Cougars held a lead five minutes into the game, it was a 28-16 NJIT lead at the break. The Highlanders pulled away in the second half by scoring the first 13 points of the final stanza and forcing the Cougars to call a timeout.
Chicago State out-rebounded the Highlanders 43-40 but was hurt by 19 turnovers to NJIT's 10. The Highlanders didn't shoot the ball remarkably well, only making 21-of-60 shots (35.0 percent). But they made the most of their attempts, finishing an impressive 11-of-15 from 3-point land and only 10-of-45 from within the arc. Sarah Olson led NJIT with 20 points.
Freshman
Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) led the Cougars with career highs in points (14) and rebounds (11). It is her second double-double of the year. She also added a block, an assist and a steal. Murphy finished 6-of-12 from the floor.
The Highlanders improve to 13-15 and 5-2 within the GWC. Chicago State falls to 4-23 (2-4 GWC). Saturday's game could be Chicago State's final visit to NJIT for awhile. Next year Chicago State joins the Western Athletic Conference while NJIT remains without a conference home in 2013-14. However the Cougars may play NJIT once more this year as Chicago State hosts the GWC Tournament March 14-16. Before the tournament, Chicago State travels to Houston Baptist on Thursday (March 7) before playing at Texas-Pan American on Saturday (March 9) to close the regular season.
