Chicago State Men’s Tennis Snaps Streak In 6-0 Win Over Robert Morris (Pa.)

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Chicago State men's tennis' victory over Robert Morris (Pa.) on Friday (Feb. 15) was one to remember. It snapped a 76-match winless streak for the Cougars dating back to March 18, 2009.

The Cougars picked up the doubles point for the second consecutive match. Chicago State won at No. 1 singles with sophomore Mario Noboa (Santo Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador/) (Santo Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador) and Sergiu Muresan (Roman, Romania/) (Roman, Romania) defeating Angus Thomson and Tarun Kishan 8-5. Freshman Jean Paul Jones (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Cruz del Sur) (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and sophomore Julian Chavez (Bogota, Colombia/) (Bogota, Colombia) topped Matheus Farreria and Jose Limon 8-7 (7-5).
 
In singles play Muresan defeated Thomson 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1. Next, Chavez went through Limon 6-2, 6-0 with ease. Noboa then defeated Farreria 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. The victory gave Chicago State four points and clinched the match.
 
Chicago State also won at No. 5 singles where sophomore Rashley Yeremia (Jakarta, Indonesia/) (Jakarta, Indonesia) bested Andre Coiro 6-1, 6-7 (1-7), 16-14. Sophomore Luis Ulloa (Guayaquil, Ecuador/) (Guayaquil, Ecuador) topped Juan Andres Hirmas 7-5, 6-4. The final match, a No. 4 singles contest with Jones and Tarun Kishan of RMU, was left unfinished after a 10-10 third set and the match already decided.
 
“I'm really proud of the men,” Chicago State head coach Jack Barton said. “The guys are really starting to believe that they are as good as the teams they play. I could see it in their play against Dayton (last week) so I knew we were going to break through this week. If we keep the high intensity and positive attitude we have nowhere to go but up. We are headed in the right direction.”

The Cougars were blanked in the nightcap against IPFW. All matches were straight sets, with the closest being Chavez' loss to Connor Andrews 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.

The Cougars are now 1-8 and play Youngstown State on Saturday.
