Chicago State Men's Tennis Takes Doubles But Falls 6-1 To YSU

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Chicago State men's tennis team continued their strong play at doubles in a 6-1 loss to Youngstown State on Saturday (Feb. 16) evening.
 
“The high point for me is that we have won the doubles point three of the last four matches so we are going to carry that positive note with us,” Chicago State head coach Jack Barton said. “We don't have a match for about two weeks so we will continue to practice doubles and now we will work on being smarter singles players. Mistakes and not coming up with big critical points really hurt us this weekend but based on our progress I am sure the guys will step up to the challenge of getting better.”
 
The Cougars easily won the doubles point thanks to an 8-1 win by sophomores Mario Noboa (Santo Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador/) (Santo Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador) and Sergiu Muresan (Roman, Romania/) (Roman, Romania) over Sebastian Hagn and Victor Theorin at No. 1. A victory at No. 2 doubles by freshman Jean Paul Jones (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Cruz del Sur) (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Julian Chavez (Bogota, Colombia/) (Bogota, Colombia) 8-2 over Zeeshan Ismail and Rodrigo Campos clinched the point.
 
“The guys played really well in doubles,” Barton said. “They woke Youngstown State up for singles. We didn't match the energy YSU brought when singles started.”
 
The closet singles contest was Chavez' 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 loss to Ismail at No. 3.
 
“Julian played really well this weekend,” Barton said. “He made his opponents play a lot of shots.”
 
YSU is 2-3. Chicago State is 1-9. The Cougars return to the court on March 1 at St. Louis, Mo.
