OMAHA – Creighton and Chicago State combined for 26 successful 3-pointers on Sunday (Dec. 29) at the CenturyLink Center in downtown Omaha. The Bluejays rode their hot touch from beyond the arc to a 90-58 victory over Chicago State.
The Cougars' 10 3-pointers matched a season-high for the Cougars. They also made 10 in a victory over Southern Illinois Nov. 30.
Two-time first team All-American Doug McDermott connected on his first four 3-point attempts to help push Creighton to a double-digit lead at 24-12 six minutes into the contest. The Cougars responded with a 14-3 run over the game's next six minutes. The run featured three 3-pointers by Chicago State's
Quinton Pippen (Hamburg, Ark./Hamburg). Junior
Clarke Rosenberg (Skokie, Ill./Evanston Township)' sunk a pair of free throws for the last points of the first half to put the Cougars down seven points, 45-38, at the break.
Creighton took control of the game with an 18-3 run in the second half. Creighton's Ethan Wragge sunk four consecutive 3-point attempts in the second half.
Rosenberg finished with a Chicago State-high 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Pippen added 13 points and four assists. Senior
Matt Ross (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) scored 11 points. Pippen passed 500 career points in the game. He now owns 507 points as a Chicago State Cougar.
Chicago State shot 38.0 percent from the floor (19-of-50). Creighton finished at 56.3 percent (27-of-48).
"Creighton is the best team we've played all year," Chicago State head coach
Tracy Dildy said. "Most of the teams in the country will have a hard time guarding them."
The Cougars turn their attention to Western Conference play.
"Our goals stay the same, and that's winning the WAC," Dildy said. "We get to start on that goal on this weekend."
Creighton improves to 10-2 and 3-0 all-time against the Cougars. Chicago State falls to 5-8. The Cougars return to the court on Jan. 4 at Idaho. It will be the program's first ever WAC game.
