CHICAGO, Ill. – Despite junior
Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville)' third straight game with double digit points (18), the Chicago State women's basketball team was defeated by the IUPUI Jaguars 68-47 Saturday afternoon (Nov. 23) at the Jones Convocation Center.
The Jaguars won their third straight game behind 22 points from Nevena Markovic and Shanika Maddox's nine points and seven rebounds. Junior
Tierra Williams (Detroit, Mich./Lathrup) pitched in 10 points for Chicago State while sophomore
Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) grabbed a season-high nine rebounds in the loss.
The first half was a close battle that featured four lead changes and five ties. After scoring the first basket of the game, the Cougars regained their advantage in the first half at 12-11 after freshman
Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney)' layup with 11:36 to go. The Jaguars answered with a 10-4 run of their own to take their largest lead of the half at 21-16 at the 5:38 mark. CSU went into the half down 27-25.
After allowing the first six points of the second half,
Angela Jackson's squad answered with consecutive three-pointers from Harris and
Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) to cut IUPUI's lead to 33-31 with 14:11 remaining. Over the next ten minutes of game time, the Summit League foe outscored the Cougars 24-6 to clinch the game.
CSU finished with 15 turnovers in the second stanza and 28 in the game which led to 32 Jaguar points.
"We need to do a better job of finding ways to work on our transition so we can make better decisions," said Jackson.
IUPUI moved to 4-1 on the season while the Cougars fell to 1-4. Chicago State returns to the court to take on Purdue Calumet at the JCC Tuesday (Nov. 26) with tipoff set for 7 pm.
