CHICAGO – Despite three Cougars finishing in double-digits, Chicago State women's basketball fell 70-51 to CSU Bakersfield on Thursday (Jan. 24) evening at the Jones Convocation Center. The two teams will be conference mates in the Western Athletic Conference next season.
After falling behind early, Chicago State took a lead as large as five in the first half. Chicago State led 22-18 with 3:21 remaining in the first half when the Roadrunners started a 19-3 run that spread over the end of the first and start of the second. The run featured a final minute of the first half that saw the Roadrunners make a 4-point play and a 3-pointer to go lead 29-22 at the break.
“When Chanel (Wilson-Stewart) and Layne (Murphy) both picked up their second foul I think that's when we kinda hit a rut and we just never recovered,” head coach
Angela Jackson said.
The second half was all CSU Bakersfield.
Sophomore
Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) finished with a game-high 16 points. She also recorded a career-high eight rebounds and six assists. Sophomore
Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) scored seven of her 11 points in the second half while grabbing eight rebounds in the contest. Sophomore
Jasmine Collins (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) also added 11 points.
Amber Williams led CSU Bakersfield with 15 points. The Roadrunners are now 7-15 while Chicago State falls to 2-18. The Cougars host Houston Baptist on Saturday (Jan. 26) in a Homecoming contest. The game will start at 1 p.m. It is the first game of a doubleheader at the Jones Convocation Center. A men's contest with Utah Valley will follow at 3:30 p.m.
