Women's Basketball Hosts NJIT On Saturday In Great West Play

Chicago State women's hoops (1-17, 0-1 GWC) plays their first Great West Conference home game of the season on Saturday (Jan. 19) at 7:30 p.m. when the NJIT Highlanders (8-12, 1-0 GWC) come to town. It is the second game of a doubleheader with the Chicago State men hosting Houton Baptist at 5:00 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY -
Saturday night's contest is the 11th all-time meeting between Chicago State and NIJT. The Cougars lead the series 7-3. Chicago State defeated the Highlanders 86-70 last February before falling 69-49 in New Jersey in the final game of the regular season.

DESTINATION: WAC 2013-14 -
Chicago State has accepted an invitation to join the Western Athletic Conference. The Cougars will join the WAC for the 2013-14 season.

TWO SIGN NLI's -
Jessica Cerda (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) and Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) have each signed on to join the Cougars in 2013-14. Cerda is a 5-10 guard who was named a Top 50 player by the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune. Harris is a 5-9 guard broke her school's career 3-point record (133) and single game scoring record (49).

WHERE ARE THE WOLVERINES? -
Saturday's home Great West Conference opener against NJIT will be the first time the Cougars don't open up at home in conference play against Utah Valley. The Cougars defeated the Wolverines in each of the first three GWC home openers.

LUCKY 7 -
Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) has recorded exactly seven assists in four games this year. Seven stands as her career high.

FREE FOR A REASON -
The Cougars have had 20 plus free throw attempts in five of their last eight games. Before this most recent stretch, Chicago State had just four games of 20 or more free throw attempts in the first 10 games. Against Western Illinois (Jan. 8), the Cougars set season-highs for free throw attempts (27) and makes (20).

THIS ONE GOES UP TO 11 -
In the Western Illinois contest, Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) went 11-for-14 from the free throw line. The 11
made free throws a single-game high in the Great West Conference this year.

DOUBLE THE FUN -
Freshman Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) picked up her second career double-double on Saturday (Dec. 29) against Southern Illinois with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She almost had her third on Jan. 3 against Akron, finishing with 10 rebounds and nine points.

WRITE IT IN INK -
Guard Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) is the only Cougar to start every game this season.

THE BLOCK DON'T STOP -
The Cougars are second in the Great West Conference in blocks per game with 3.4. Chicago State has 60 blocks on the season.

Chicago State leads the Great West Conference in offensive rebounds per game (13.6).

Chicago State's 9.9 steals per game ranks first in the Great West Conference.

Sophomores Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) and Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) were named to the 2012-13 Great West Conference Preseason Second Team by a vote of the league's head coaches.

SUPER SOPHS -
Sophomores Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville), Tierra Williams (Detroit, Mich./Lathrup) and Chanel Wilson-Stewart (Hillside, Ill./St. Joseph's) played in all 30 games last season as freshmen.

If you were wondering, there is no relation between Paris and Tierra Williams (Detroit, Mich./Lathrup).

IMPORTED FROM DETROIT -
Not surprising, Detroit native Chicago State head coach Angela Jackson has three Cougars from Detroit on the 2012-13 roster. Freshman April Watson (Detroit, Mich./University Prep) and sophomores Tierra Williams (Detroit, Mich./Lathrup) and Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) all call the Motor City home.

IN NON CONFERENCE PLAY -
The 2012-13 Chicago State schedule features non-conference games with eight NCAA Division I conferences. The slate includes contests with schools from the SEC (Missouri), Big Ten (Northwestern) and Conference USA (Rice).

LIGHTS CAMERAS LAKESHORE -
Chicago State's home contest with Western Illinois on Jan. 29 will be aired live on Lakeshore Public Television. The game will start at 7:00 p.m.
