Chicago State trailed at halftime 41-23, but ramped up the defensive pressure in the second half. The defensive pressure cut the deficit to 45-23 with 13:34 remaining but it would be as close as the Cougars would advance.
“We still have to learn how to play a 40-minute game, but this will be a film we can watch where we did have some things that were in our favor,” Chicago State head coach
Angela Jackson said.
Sophomore
Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) added nine points and tied a career-high with seven assists. She played all 40 minutes for coach Jackson. Sophomore
Jasmine Collins (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) also chipped in eight points and contributed to Chicago State's 28-20 points in the paint advantage.
“I though we did a good job of shooting gaps (of Omaha's zone defense),” Jackson said. “I though we could have done a better job of penetrating because down the stretch when we did penetrate we were able to get layups from it.”
Senior Paige Frauendorfer led four Mavericks in double figures with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Senior Carolyn Blair-Mobley added 11 points, while Ericka House and Jamie Nash scored 10 points each.
Chicago State fell to 1-17 on the season with the loss and Nebraska Omaha improved to 12-5. The Cougars' next contest will take place on Saturday (Jan. 19) night when they host Great West Conference opponent NJIT at 7:30 p.m.
