CHICAGO – The Chicago State University men's tennis team opened the month of April with a tough battle in Macomb Sunday afternoon as it dropped a close 4-3 decision to host Western Illinois at the Brophy Courts.
The No. 1 doubles team of freshmen Mario Naboa (Santo Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador) and Sergiu Muresan (Roman, Romania/) (Roman, Romania) captured an 8-3 win over the Leatherneck tandem of Patrick Hammers and Ben Yue, but the host team won the final two doubles contests to claim a 1-0 lead.
Naboa opened singles play for the Green and White by capturing his second win of the season at No. 1 singles after posting a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Hammers, while fellow classmates Rashley Yeremia (Jakarta, Indonesia/) (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Luis Ulloa (Guayaquil, Ecuador/) (Guayaquil, Ecuador) recorded their first singles wins as collegians.
Yeremia defeated WIU's Andrew Yopp by scores of 6-4 and 6-3 at No. 4 singles, and Ulloa captured his No. 5 singles contest over Daniel Sweeney via a 6-3, 6-1 decision.
The Cougars (0-18) return to action this Friday with a trip to Ohio for a Mid-American Conference match at Toledo.
