Rice Earns 68-42 Decision Over Chicago State Women's Basketball

HOUSTON – Chicago State women's hoops dropped a 68-42 non-conference contest at Rice on Thursday (Dec. 13) evening.
 
The clubs traded baskets to start the game before Rice used a 12-0 run to grab a 16-4 advantage. The Cougars turned up the defensive intensity and didn't allow a Rice basket from 9:49 to 2:43. Chicago State forced five turnovers during the stretch. However a 7-0 Rice run to close the half gave the Owls a 32-11 lead at the break.
 
Chicago State was led offensively by sophomore Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville)' (St. Louis, Mo./University Prep) 13 points. Sophomore Tierra Williams (Detroit, Mich./Lathrup) (Detroit, Mich./Lathrp) added eight points, breaking her streak of four straight contests with double-digit points. Freshman Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) recorded eight points, eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Sophomore Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) had a career-high seven steals and tied a career-best with seven assists.

The Cougars recorded 18 steals and forced 25 Rice turnovers. Chicago State finished the game with a 21-20 offensive rebounding advantage after trailing the category 12-6 at halftime. 

"I think all of our freshmen really stepped up and played well today," Chicago State head coach Angela Jackson said. "These are the types of games that you can learn from and hopefully take some steps forward."
 
Rice was led by Jessica Kuster and Megan Palmer. Each had 14 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Rice improves to 4-4. Chicago State falls to 1-8. The Cougars host Miami (Ohio) on Sunday at 2 p.m. in non-conference play at the Jones Convocation Center.
