CHICAGO - Sophomore guard
Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) (Detroit/Martin Luther King) finished with 12 points, seven assists and three steals, but it wasn't enough as Chicago State women's basketball dropped the 2012-13 season opener to the UW-Milwaukee Panthers 82-58 at the Jones Convocation Center on Friday (Nov. 9).
The Cougars opened the first half by knocking down their first five shots from the field, but could not keep UW-Milwaukee off the glass and away from the free throw line. The Panthers grabbed 16 offensive rebounds in the opening 20 minutes which led to 10 second chance points. UW-Milwaukee made 10-of-14 free throw attempts to negate the hot first half shooting (62.5 percent, 15-of-24) of the Cougars who trailed at intermission 41-36. The half featured 13 lead changes and seven ties.
UW-Milwaukee (1-0) began the second half on a 19-3 run.
“That stretch in the second half we came out a little flat,” Chicago State head coach
Angela Jackson said. “Then after Jackie picked up her fourth foul a little of the nerves got to us.”
Sophomore forward
Jasmine Collins (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) was the only other Cougar in double figures with 10 points. Freshman Nia-Taylor Clark (Bowie, Md./Bowie) finished with nine points off the bench for Chicago State while sophomore
Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) and freshman
Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) added six points each.
Angela Rodriguez of UW-Milwaukee led all scorers with 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-7 from three point range.
Despite the setback, the Cougars showed the ability to get out and run in the first half, scoring all nine of their fast break points in the first stanza.
“We're a young team,” Jackson said. “Right now until we offensively can score in the half court we'll need to get some steals and get out in transition.”
Chicago State (0-1) travels to the University of Missouri for their second contest of the season on Monday, November 12 at 7 p.m. The Cougars return home to the Jones Convocation Center on Friday, November 16 for a non-conference match-up against Indiana Northwest. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
