Three Cougars Score In Double-Digits In CSU Women's Hoops' Win Over IU Northwest

Cougars leave no doubt with big scoring run in the second half

CHICAGO – Chicago State women's basketball pulled away from IU Northwest on Friday (Nov. 16) evening thanks to a 25-5 run in the second half. The Cougars topped the Redhawks 67-44 to earn Chicago State their first victory of the season.
 
Sophomore Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) scored all of her game-high 15 points in the second half. She grabbed six offensive rebounds, five of which also came in the second half. She was one of three Cougars in double-digits. Freshman Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) added 10 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and three assists for her first career double-double. Freshman April Watson (Detroit, Mich./University Prep) (Detroit, Mich./University Prep) turned in a 12-point performance with nine rebounds.
 
The Cougars limited the Redhawks to 27.3 percent (12-of-44) shooting. While the Cougars didn't shoot great themselves, (34.6 percent, 27-of-78) they did hold a commanding offensive rebounding advantage (22-10) and force 33 turnovers. Chicago State led 34-8 in points off turnovers and 16-2 in second chance points.
 
“We had a better effort in the second half,” head coach Angela Jackson said. “I'm very pleased with the effort in the second half and the people that came off the bench and the intensity that picked up defensively.”
 
IU Northwest falls to 3-4. Chicago State is now 1-2.  The Cougars travel to Hampton on Sunday (Nov. 18). Tip for the non-conference game is set for 3 p.m. CT.
